8th February - Table Tennis England (TTE) - National Council (NC) - Further Documents & Senior National Championships

Please find late Papers distributed by TTE for the NC being held this coming Saturday 9th February in Milton Keynes (previous Papers distributed can be seen in earlier news items below). They include the Election Calendar, Para Report, Board Summary from December and NC Q&A. Also, the latest news from TTE - 0802019 - gives a link to the TTE Website where the confirmed competitors for the forthcoming Senior National Championships in Derby, and where the Sussex contingent inlcude Jack & Josh Bennett, George Hazell and Lois Peake. We wish them the best of luck. There is also a link to TTE website for the British League Results.

8th February - Active Sussex - February Newsletter

Please find latest Newsletter from Active Sussex which includes a variety of articles relating to all sports within Sussex. This edition includes information about their forthcoming Conference, recruitment for the Board, a project in the Rother District, and "The Girl Can" campaign status.There is much more including request for volunteers for the Brighton Marathon and registration for TAKEPART Festival.

4th February - County Championship - Sussex Senior 1st Team - Winners!!!

This last weekend the Senior 1st Team retained the County Championship Title for the 4th time in a row. The Team consisting of Jack & Josh Bennett, George Hazell, Lois Peake, Yolanda King and not forgetting Teresa Bennett who stood in when Yolanda was unwell. There were wins over Surrey 6-4, Yorkshire 6-4, Warwickshire 10 -0 and Nottinghamshire 9-1. Both Jack and Josh won 7/8 of their games, George 5/8 and Lois Peake a staggering 8/8. Yolanda King 2/2 and Teresa 2/6. Congratulations to the Team and special thanks for Maureen Hazell in all the arrangements. 

4th February - Weald TT Club - 25th Anniversary

The Weald TT Club is celebrating in 2019 its 25th Anniversary and a resume of its history, current activities and development ambitions can be found here.

1st February - Table Tennis England (TTE) - National Council

Please find further to the news item below on the 24th January, documents issued by TTE for the forthcoming NC meeting at Kents Hill, Milton Keynes. They are the Agenda and Board Report with associated Appendix. Topics for discussion include the future of the voting system (although TTE have already reviewed this and made a recommendation - see news item 24th January), and the future of the NC. On the latter support is being reduced by TTE going forward and whether the NC has any future input to the Governance given that there a Members Advisory Group is in the process of being set up. I certainly would like to see how the MAG will interface with Counties and Leagues. If any one has any view then please let me know.

1st February - National Championships - Sussex Qualifiers

Well done to Sussex Players Jack Bennett and George Hazell in qualifying, with the National Ranked Players, for the National Championships - please see news item on TTE webiste via recent TTE News - 250119. Also, on today's TTE News - 010219 - all the recent British League results.

1st February - West Sussex Schools Individual Events 2019 - Results

The West Sussex Schools Individual Events took place on Wednesday 30th January in the Sports Hall at Warden Park School, Cuckfield near Haywards Heath. This is part of the Butterfly Schools Individual Championships. There was a good entry particularly for the U13 and U16 Boys and the winners going through to the zonal round were, along with their School, as follows:

  • U11 Boys - Arran Goode (Fishbourne);
  • U11 Girls - Chloe Robinson (Southwater);
  • U13 Boys - Harry Yip (Tanbridge);
  • U13 Girls - Ella Lazenby (Warden Park);
  • U16 Boys - Owen Brown (Forest);
  • U16 Girls - Sasha O'Halloran (Tanbridge);
  • U19 Boys - Will Michell (Collyers College);
  • U19 Girls - Claudia Hough (Worth College);

Special thanks to Warden Park School for us of their Sports Hall, and also for the use of the Tables and Equipment belonging to the Haywards Heath League;

1st February - Sussex Schools Team Events 2019 - Zonal Round Results

The Sussex School Teams that represented both East and West Sussex Schools played the zonal round during January. Two Teams made it through to the Regional Finals on the 10th February in Bristol - they are the Tanbridge School U16 Boys Team and the Collyers College U19 Girls Team. Congratulations to them and we wish them well for the next round.

1st February - Coaching News - Haywards Heath League Camp & Workshops

Marc Burman is running a TT Camp at Sackville School, Lewes Road, East Grinstead from 18th February to 21st February. Please see details here.

1st February - Active Sussex - Disability & Inclusion News

Please se the latest Newsletter from the Active Sussex organisation with various news items relating to Disability and Inclusion and is relevant to all sports.  

1st February - County Championship Veteran Third Team - Division 2C - 19th January - Results

The Sussex Veteran Third Team was in action also on the 19th January at BATTS in Harlow and had a 6-4 loss to Surrey 2 Team and a 5-5 draw with Kent 3 Team. Playing were Tony Catt, David Steel, Richard Hazell and Lynne Trussell. The Team are second from the bottom. The results were as follows with links to the Result Sheets:

1st February - County Championship Veteran Second Team - Division 1B

The Sussex Veteran Second Team was in action on the 19th January at the Graham Spicer Club and had a 6-4 win against Kent 2, and a 9-1 loss to Berks 1 Team which leaves them second from bottom of the division on sets since three teams on the same number of points. The Team consisted of Rory Scott, Jack Boult, Alex Cumbers and Sarah Hilditch. The results were as follows with links to the Result Sheets (print to read correctly):

24th January - Table Tennis England (TTE) - Company Membership & Voting (CMV)

Please find documents distributed by TTE relating to the recommendation on future Company Membership and Voting as follows::

My summary regarding these documents are that:


  • TTE have reviewed the IRP recommendations regarding Company Membership & Voting;
  • Concluded for Voting that should not be weighted dependent on player/team numbers – but one vote per County, League and Clubs (Directly Affiliated such as Premier or Associate);
  • Greater definition of Directly Affiliated Clubs and League Company Members proposed;
  • Changes to Articles will be required;
  • Reduces Company Members from over 300 down to around 50;


18th January - Table Tennis England (TTE) - National Council Meeting - 9th February

The notice has been received that the next National Council Meeting has been scheduled for 9th February - details regarding Agenda will be listed here when available. Recent newsletters from TTE follow which include items about entries being due now for the League Cup Competitions (041119) and the date of 30th/31st March for the National Conference in Leicester (110119 and forthcoming National Championships (181119).

17th January - Sussex County - Closed Tournament - Sunday 28th April

The Sussex Closed Tournament has now been confirmed for Sunday 28th April at the K2 Leisure Centre, Crawley. (A suitable venue could not be found for the previous date advertised of 7th April). The Entry Form is being updated and will be available in early February. 

17th January - Veteran County Championship - Sussex 2 & 3 Teams - Forthcoming Matches

Further to the news item on the reports from the last matches for the Sussex Veteran 2nd and 3rd Teams, the next round of matches are this coming Saturday 19th January at the Graham Spicer Institute New Malden for the Sussex 2 Team in Division 1B, and also at BATTs, Harlow for the Sussex 3 Team in Division 2C. We wish them luck. Tony Catt is standing down as Veteran Match Secretary this season and as yet there is no one volunteering to take his place. If no volunteer is forthcoming by May, when entries are made for next season, then there will be no Veteran Teams entered next season. So I will be asking Vets over the coming months for a volunteer, and for Vets to put their thinking caps on!

17th January - East Sussex County Schools Table Tennis  Association (ESSTTA) - Individual Events - Results

The Qualifying Round for the Individual Events for East Sussex Schools have taken place in recent weeks and there were 118 in attendance over the 2 days which is fantastic. Please see the participants and results for the U11, and U13/U16. The U19 age category has yet to be held. Winners go forward to the Zonal Rounds. The West Sussex Individual Events are scheduled for Wednesday 30th January at Warden Park School (see news item 16th January). The zonal round for the winners of Team Events for East and West School Teams held in November are this coming weekend and all are wished good luck.

17th January - Eastbourne League - Coaching Session 4th January - Report 

Building on the recent County sponsored Coaching Session for the Eastbourne League (see previous news item on 19th December), a further session was held on the 4th January, initiated and held by the League themselves and following the County format, and future sessions are planned. There were 15 Cadets/Juniors in attendance for 4 hours from St Michaels, Polegate and Hailsham Clubs hosted at Hailsham with Scott Bills and with Coach Teresa Bennett along with Josh and Jack Bennett, If any League or Clubs are looking to initiate Coaching Sessions then please contact Maureen Hazell on This email address is being protected from spambots. 17th January - Sussex County TT Association - County Plan Season 2018/2019

The Sussex County Plan at Issue 1 can be found here. It lists the deliverables that the Association is looking to deliver through the year, along with the ongoing activities and a number have been completed and the long-term aim and strategy is also listed. As ever it is dependent on volunteers and if you wish to participate then please let your League representative know.

17th January - Top Edge Training Camp - February 2019

Further to the news items on the 19th November and December below, the Top Edge Training Camp taking place in February 2019 in Christchurch has a few places left. How to book and a video on previous Training Camp can be found here and more information. All skill levels are catered for.

16th January - Active Sussex Network 2019 - 28th February

Active Sussex which represent all Sports in Sussex are holding a get together with speaker and workshops on the 28th February at the Buxted Hotel. If interested please Information on how to book.

16th January - West Sussex County Schools Table Tennis  Association (ESSTTA) - Individual Events - Entry Form

The Qualifying for the West Sussex Schools Individual Events are taking place at Warden Park School on the 30th January for the various age categories of U11, U13, U16 and U19. Please find the Entry Form and a recent Mailing to all West Sussex Schools. The charge for entry is £3 per boy or girl although the School needs to be affiliated (unless affiliated for the Team Events in November) which costs £15.

16th January 2019 - County Meeting 4th January

A County Meeting was held on the 4th January at a new venue - The Linklater Pavilion in Lewes. The previous meeting was in September and it had been difficult to get critical mass due to the fact that many of the attendees are involved in TT during the week!!. The following are the main points from the meeting:

  • Minute's silence for the passing of Peter Wales (County Life Member) and Dennis Rhodes (County Vice President);
  • National Council - Feedback from Tony Catt from last meeting and he indicated that applications for the Members Advisory Group (MAG) had closed and interview were underway. The MAG will also include representatives from various "expert" groups;
  • National Council - The next NC is on the 9th February; It is the expectation that the body will be replaced by a County Representatives Meeting in due course. 
  • TT365 League Manager - Discussion around whether current funding model from TTE will change when new Membership Database interfaces. Potential increase of League Manager charges to Leagues;
  • County Championship - Senior 1st Team won all their matches on the first weekend and the second weekend is shortly on the 2nd/3rd February. The Senior 2nd Team played 5th/6th January and a report will be available soon and Senior 3rd Team arrangements have been finalised;
  • County Championship - Awaiting reports for the Junior/Cadet Teams and reports on the Veteran Teams are on the website;
  • People - Tony Catt has announced that he is standing back from TT and so a new Veteran Match Secretary and National Councillor are required - Volunteers please!
  • Schools Support - Agreement for support to Schools of £50 per School for those that reached the Regional Rounds subject to maximum of £200;
  • County Championship Players - Proposal to waiver Affiliation Fee for those players playing for the County but not playing in local Leagues due to University or working away was agreed. To be agreed on individual basis;
  • County Championship Rankings - Affirmed that Match Secretaries were accountable for their availability and use of County Trials if considered necessary. Other sources to be taken into account to include TT365 rankings and advice to Match Secretaries from the Coaching Panel;
  • Coaching - Eastbourne League - Support given by County for coaching session. Further coaching sessions for other Leagues are under discussion;
  • Coaching - Support given to County Juniors within British League Teams and further inter-County coaching sessions are under consideration;
  • County Championship Shirts - Volunteer available for collecting information on current distribution, stock and requirements prior to future order decision;
  • Invitation Event - Options for revamping the event discussed, perhaps to late afternoon or evening and perhaps combined with a social. Suitable venue being sought;
  • Sussex Closed - Venue could not be found for original date and this has now been confirmed for Sunday April 28th at the K2 Crawley. Volunteers for assisting are welcome;

1st January 2019 - Happy New Year & Sussex County Meeting 4th January
